Although PTSIs include mental health disorders, physical impairments such as the development of chronic pain and cardiovascular conditions are also implicated. The current study was designed to assess for changes in cardiac function among RCMP within their first three years of field service. Participants (n=96) were mostly male (71.6%), men (71.6%), White (85.6%), with a mean age of 30.22±6.22 years. The current results evidenced deteriorations in cardiac function; diastolic cardiac function began to deteriorate as early as the second year of field service, with changes in systolic function occurring concurrently, or within the following year, suggesting that deteriorating cardiac function may constitute a PTSI. Incorporating bestpractice cardiac rehabilitation exercise prescription guidelines tailored to the maintenance or improvement of diastolic function into existing occupational health and wellness programs may support a mechanistic role in reducing the risk of major adverse cardiac events among RCMP officers and other high-risk occupational populations. - Source: PubMed

GC-MS and LC-MS identified 71 compounds across both extracts. The flower extract contained the highest total phenolic content (TPC) (48.47 ± 2.03 mg GAE/g), while the stem extract showed higher total flavonoid content (TFC) (9.21 ± 0.10 mg QE/g), and total triterpenoid contents (TTC) (27.01 ± 1.06 mg OAE/g). The flower extract demonstrated stronger antioxidant activity than the stem extract, with IC values of 18.00 ± 0.28 µg/mL (DPPH) and 3.81 ± 0.04 µg/mL (ABTS). It also exhibited antifungal activity against four pathogenic fungal strains (MIC: 500-1000 µg/mL). In addition, both extracts showed α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, particularly the flower extract (IC = 5.87 ± 0.18 µg/mL), compared with the stem extract (IC = 23.27 ± 0.77 µg/mL), suggesting the presence of constituents associated with antidiabetic potential. Molecular docking suggested that key compounds-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester (stem) and 6β-acetoxy-5-epilimonin (flower)-may contribute to enzyme inhibition, with binding energies of -10.0 and -9.4 kcal/mol, respectively. Overall, these findings suggest that H. capitata, particularly its flowers, represents a promising source of bioactive compounds for further isolation and in vivo validation. - Source: PubMed

In this study, we investigated the photobasicity of excitation dependent full color light emitting carbon Dots (C-Dots) and examined the role of nitrogen sites, specifically pyridinic, pyrrolic, and graphitic nitrogen in the core, along with various electron-donating (-NH) and electron-withdrawing (-COOH) surface functional groups in regulating their photobase characteristics. Exploring the photobasic properties and proton transfer pathways of differently emitting C-Dots is challenging due to their complex internal structure. To address this, the ground- and excited-state p values, along with the protonation sites of different emitting C-Dots, were first determined using pH-metric titration. Furthermore, optical studies were carried out to investigate the photobase properties of the C-Dots. The combined results suggest the protonation pathways in various emitting C-Dots. In B-C-Dots, proton abstraction occurs directly at the core from water, whereas in G-C-Dots and R-C-Dots, protonation occurs with the assistance of functional groups present on the surface of the C-Dots upon the photoexcitation of C-Dots. Ultrafast spectroscopic measurements reveal that proton transfer occurs in different emitting C-Dots within 180-480 fs after excitation, with the fastest process observed in G-C-Dots at approximately 185 fs. Therefore, this study provides a strategy for controlling the photobasicity of C-Dots, which may open up promising applications in related fields. - Source: PubMed

This study provides a comprehensive description of the phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of Silene colorata. Binding profiles of eight identified compounds were simulated against α-amylase. GC-MS analysis revealed 57 compounds, mainly fatty acids and esters (73.65%), while UHPLC-MS/MS identified 2',4'-dihydroxychalcone (20.72%), (epi)gallocatechin-C-hexoside (12.53%), apigetrin (10.10%), and hexahydroxyheptanoic acid (8.57%) as major components. The hydro-alcoholic extract showed a strong antiradical effect (IC = 7.57 ± 0.26 µg/mL by ABTS assay; A = 48.93 ± 3.88 µg/mL by phenanthroline assay). Its sun protection factor (SPF) was also the highest (40.561 ± 0.87). The chloroform fraction showed notable activity against α-amylase (IC = 22.86 ± 3.19 µg/mL) and butyrylcholinesterase (IC = 111.08 ± 4.72 µg/mL). The complex 3-tetradecyn-1-ol and α-amylase appeared more stable, but in an antagonistic manner (-4.8 kcal/mol). While this work reveals crucial findings, further in vivo studies are needed to confirm and expand on these results. - Source: PubMed
