- Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI/R)-induced lung injury is a major pulmonary complication after cardiac surgery. We aimed to verify this phenomenon in rats and to investigate whether electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment at bilateral Feishu (BL13) and Zusanli (ST36) acupoints (once daily for 3 days) exerts protective effects. In an MI/R-induced lung injury model in SD rats, EA pretreatment significantly improved lung function and reduced pathological damage (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). It also attenuated the pulmonary inflammatory response and decreased the expression of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Intratracheal administration of recombinant HMGB1 (rHMGB1) to upregulate lung HMGB1/RAGE signaling impaired the pulmonary protective effect of EA (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). Together, these findings demonstrate that EA pretreatment mitigates MI/R-induced lung injury by inhibiting HMGB1/RAGE signaling. - Source: PubMed

Wang XueqingDong XiumeiHe CunbaoZhang JunjieBan WenmingZhu GuoqiWang JingjiZhen Yilan - Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease affecting at least 2% of the global population. Papaverine, an alkaloid with known anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and RAGE-antagonistic properties, has not been previously evaluated for anti-psoriatic activity. This study investigated the protective effects and mechanisms of papaverine in an imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis-like model in BALB/c mice. Papaverine treatment significantly ameliorated clinical symptoms, as evidenced by reductions in psoriatic lesions, skin thickness, severity index scores, T- and B-cell infiltration, and cutaneous angiogenesis. It also downregulated IMQ-induced mRNA expression of keratinocyte differentiation markers Krt10 and Ivl. Flow cytometric analysis revealed a marked reduction in B220⁺CD138⁺ plasmablasts and B220⁻CD138⁺ plasma cells in both circulation and spleen. These effects were associated with modulation of key transcription factors involved in plasma cell differentiation, including Prdm1, Xbp1, and Bcl6. Notably, the population of CD3⁺CD4⁻CD8⁻ double-negative T cells was also decreased following papaverine administration. Inflammatory cytokine and chemokine mRNA levels in IMQ-exposed skin-namely Il1b, Il6, Ifng, Mcp1, Il22, S100a7, and Ager-were significantly suppressed. These findings suggest that papaverine ameliorates psoriasis-like symptoms through inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines and suppression of aberrant plasma cell differentiation. In conclusion, papaverine demonstrates therapeutic potential as a candidate for the treatment of psoriasis. - Source: PubMed

However, scalable synthesis methods have lacked control over the orientation and patterning of the Te atomic chains, thus limiting its practical use. Guided by theory, we overcome this challenge using nanowire-shaped templates to achieve oriented, single-crystal growth of Te on amorphous substrates. Strong alignment of Te atomic chains is achieved as template widths are reduced to sub-20 nm. This high structural order, confirmed by 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy, enables the observation of pristine quantum transport phenomena for deterministically patterned Te. Field-effect transistors exhibit well-defined conductance plateaus at 77 K due to the population of individual 1D subbands. Furthermore, Coulomb blockade emerges at 1.7 K, with the Te channel acting as a gate-tunable quantum dot. This synthesis approach provides a scalable pathway for integration of Te-based quantum materials for future electronic and quantum technologies. - Source: PubMed
