Liu LuCao YidanZheng YunhuaHu Fan - Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) are emerging aquatic contaminants with potential toxicological impacts on fish health and aquaculture sustainability. This study evaluated the dose-dependent effects of PS-MPs on growth performance, enzymatic activity, hematological parameters, behavior, nutrient digestibility, and histopathology in Labeo rohita (Rohu). A total of 180 fingerlings were randomly assigned to three groups: control (0 mg/L), low exposure (50 mg/L), and high exposure (100 mg/L), with triplicate tanks (n = 20 fish per tank) over a 21-day period. Exposure to PS-MPs significantly impaired growth performance, as evidenced by reduced weight gain, increased feed conversion ratio, and decreased survival in the high-dose group (p < 0.05). Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in gill and intestinal tissues declined markedly in a dose-dependent manner, indicating compromised metabolic and absorptive functions. Hematological analysis revealed reduced red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration, alongside elevated white blood cell count, suggesting anemia and stress-induced immune responses. Behavioral alterations, including reduced feeding efficiency, irregular swimming, and increased bottom-dwelling activity, were more pronounced at higher concentrations. Furthermore, nutrient digestibility coefficients for dry matter, protein, fat, and energy decreased significantly with increasing PS-MP exposure. Histopathological examination confirmed severe structural damage in gill and intestinal tissues, including epithelial lifting, lamellar fusion, necrosis, villi shortening, and inflammation. These findings demonstrate that PS-MPs exert multilevel toxic effects on L. rohita (Rohu), disrupting physiological, biochemical, and structural integrity. Overall, this study highlights the ecological and toxicological risks of microplastic contamination in freshwater systems and underscores the need for mitigation strategies to protect aquatic organisms and aquaculture productivity. - Source: PubMed

Tek TolgaÖzsarı ArifTilki MuratDeli Şekip CanÇetin M Çağrı - Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) refers to the traditional and cumulative knowledge, skills, and beliefs about the relationship between humans and nature that are passed on from generation to generation within indigenous cultures. As communities worldwide grapple with mental health issues, environmental deterioration, social disintegration, and the loss of indigenous knowledge systems, there is a growing interest in approaches that integrate TEK to promote holistic well-being. The current mixed-methods study was carried out in Southwestern China among ethnic communities to investigate the role of TEK in mental health education and sustainable community well-being. Data were collected through a validated 32-item questionnaire (internal consistency reliability: Cronbach's = 0.89) completed by 240 participants and semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory observations of 48 participants. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that TEK participation was positively associated with mental health awareness (r = 0.71, < 0.01), emotional resilience (r = 0.78, < 0.01), and sustainability engagement (r = 0.74, < 0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis also revealed that TEK participation was the most significant predictor of emotional resilience ( = 0.48, < 0.001), followed by mental health awareness (β = 0.31, < 0.001) and sustainability engagement (β = 0.24, < 0.001), accounting for 64% of the variance in emotional resilience (R = 0.64). Results showed that communities with higher levels of TEK participation exhibited stronger social cohesion, lower perceived stress, higher emotional resilience, and higher environmental responsibility. - Source: PubMed
