- Consumers in the United Kingdom (UK) are increasingly choosing plant-based milk alternatives (PBMAs) due to food hypersensitivity, nutritional and sustainability considerations. With the growth of online shopping, comprehension of food product information available via retailer websites is important. This study evaluated allergen and nutrition information and sustainability claims for PBMAs available on three major UK retailers' websites. A review conducted between June and July 2024 collected data on 196 PBMAs from supermarket webpages, including product characteristics (processing method, sweetened/unsweetened), food allergens in the ingredients list, precautionary allergen labelling (PAL), nutrition information, claims (food hypersensitivity, environment, sustainability, nutrition and health), and the presence and type of front of pack nutrition label (FOPNL). Product types (oat, almond, soya, and coconut) and retailers were compared using one-way ANOVA or a non-parametric alternative test. Associations between product data and types/retailers were checked using Chi-square tests. There was a significant association between product types and PAL ((2) = 27.651, < 0.001), with PAL statements found on fewer oat (16%) and soya (14%) drinks compared to coconut (50%) and almond drinks (70%). Significant associations were identified between retailers and the presence of PAL statements ((2) = 79.268, < 0.001) and hypersensitivity claims ((2) = 8.754, = 0.013). The type of FOPNL used varied significantly between retailers ((2) = 12.398; = 0.015), with 51%-72% products displaying no FOPNL; 16%-36% using the plain format and only 7%-13% using the Traffic Light format. These measures are often integrated through a policy package, that employs a Nutrient Profile Model (NPM) for the classification of food. In Brazil, however, these policies remain fragmented, and current food advertising regulations do not fully cover all channels, particularly digital media. This study applied the NPM adopted in Brazil's FoPNL (RDC No. 429/2020 in conjunction with IN No. 75/2020, hereafter RDC 429) and those proposed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for identifying foods subject to advertising restrictions on social media posts directed at children and adolescents. The sample included posts from ultra-processed food brands/products on Instagram (n = 623), TikTok (n = 257), and YouTube (n = 114). Both NPM were applied to assess non-compliance at the food-item level and at the advertisement level (considering posts containing at least one non-compliant food). At the food-item level, 61.28% of products exceeded at least one item of RDC 429, with the highest prevalence on TikTok (72.63%), while 93.86% were non-compliant according to PAHO, reaching 100% on TikTok and 98.5% on YouTube. At the advertisement level, 49.53% of posts contained at least one non-compliant food under RDC 429, and 74.13% under PAHO, with YouTube showing the greatest potential for restriction (62.16% RDC; 99.10% PAHO). Both models are feasible for regulating digital food advertising: the PAHO provides a robust framework, while RDC 429 offers a strategic starting point given its current implementation in Brazil. - Source: PubMed

Besides labeling, sociodemographic factors may influence the understanding of nutritional information and food choices. This experimental, controlled, and randomized study used secondary data derived from previously published research to evaluate the impact of sociodemographic variables, including region, sex, age, education, and income. Specifically, we analyzed how these factors influence the understanding of nutritional information, the perception of healthfulness, and the purchase intention of products with different FOPNL models and nutrition claims. A sample of 720 Brazilian adults completed an online questionnaire, being randomly assigned to one of four FOPNL conditions: control (without FOPNL), octagon, triangle, or magnifying glass. Participants evaluated 12 label panels in a 3×2×2 factorial design, considering 1) food category, 2) number of nutrients in excess and 3) presence/absence of nutrition claims. Understanding of nutritional information was measured as the ability to correctly identify nutrients in excess using a generalized linear model with binary logistic regression. Perception of healthfulness and purchase intention were assessed on a 7-point scale using mixed analysis of variance models, with the sociodemographic variables (region, sex, age, education, and income) as fixed effects and participants as random effects. The results indicate that sociodemographic variables did not significantly affect the understanding of nutritional information. However, participants aged 25 to 34 and male participants reported higher perception of healthfulness and greater purchase intention compared to other groups. These findings suggest that, although the provision of nutritional information on packages supports informed food choices across diverse sociodemographic contexts, age and sex specifically influenced how consumers perceived product healthfulness and their likelihood of purchasing the presented items in this sample. - Source: PubMed

Recent national surveys and meta-analyses indicate that 9-12% of Indian children and adolescents are obese or overweight. Prevention requires population-level strategies that reshape food and physical activity environments. Strong evidence supports fiscal measures on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSB), clear Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL), and statutory restrictions on marketing to children, complemented by school and family-based programmes. India has established important building blocks, including the 2020 Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations restricting High Fat, Salt, Sugar (HFSS) foods in and around schools, the Ayushman Bharat School Health Programme (AB-SHP), the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) meal scheme, and higher effective taxation on sugary drinks, with a front-of-pack labelling system under development. To strengthen impact, priorities include strict enforcement of school-food rules, along with provision of safe drinking water within the school settings; finalisation of interpretive labelling, comprehensive marketing restrictions across all media and retail near schools, and channelling revenue from HFSS taxation towards providing nutritious meals in schools. Safeguarding physical education and recess, promoting active school transport, and integrating early-life actions such as breastfeeding support and antibiotic stewardship are also important. Progress depends on routine surveillance for crossing of centiles, equity-focused evaluation of policy implementation and program outcomes, transparent public scorecards detailing adherence to policies and program impact, and safeguards against conflicts of interest.
