- The modified magnesium slag (MMS)-based cementitious material (M·C) is a green backfill cementitious material developed using the synergistic effect of regional solid wastes (MMS and fly ash (FA)). Precise selection of FA directly governs the cementitious quality and application performance of M·C. This study investigated the effects of basic characteristics of FA emitted from different power plants in Yulin city on the mechanical and hydration properties of M·C. The results indicate: (1) FA varies in chemical composition, particle size, and hydration activity, while its activity mainly derives from -CaO and amorphous phases. (2) FA reduces M·C early strength, but the 28 d strength reaches 12.75-19.35 MPa, higher than the control (10.31 MPa). M·C (75-20-5) showed the highest strength among all groups. The FA activity index method in GB 1596 is not fully applicable to the M·C system, and MMS standard samples should be used as the reference specimens. (3) FA reduces M·C heat release rate and cumulative heat. The early hydration heat of M·C activated by various FAs was mainly governed by the coupled effects of particle size and -CaO content. (4) All hydration products of M·C contain CH, AFt, and C-S(A)-H. Early hydration is controlled by FA particle size and -CaO content, while late hydration by its pozzolanic activity. FA and MMS jointly provide an active Al source for the formation of AFt. Additionally, heterogeneous FA affects the hydration degree, not the mechanism or product type. (5) In the cases of M·C, M·C, and M·C, the hydration product layers are thin and relatively loose, resulting in lower strengths compared to the other samples. Thus, FA, FA, and FA are not recommended for the M·C system, while FA is preferred. The research results provide a basis for precise FA selection in M·C, as well as theoretical and technical support for its standardized application. - Source: PubMed

Ruan ShishanGuo LijieLiu LangShao ChengchengXu WenyuanHan YandongShi CaixingYang ChaoYan Zepeng - Wahring et al. demonstrate that men depend more on romantic relationships than women, contradicting conventional wisdom. The Tie-Up Theory explains this through fundamental asymmetries in bonding systems: men's receptive emotional area channels emotional needs primarily toward romantic partners, while women's active emotional area enables spontaneous emotional connections across multiple relationships. This biobehavioral architecture, not mere socialization, explains men's greater relationship striving, health benefits from partnership, reluctance to initiate breakups, and severe post-dissolution suffering. - Source: PubMed

Emerging evidence suggests that digestive enzymes such as α-glucosidase regulate lipid and glucose homeostasis through postprandial metabolic pathways and may represent a potential therapeutic target for NAFLD management. This study investigated the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of sea cucumber collagen peptides. Five collagen hydrolysates were prepared, among which the hydrolysate obtained by pepsin digestion for 2 h followed by trypsin digestion for 3 h (SDP 2 h + T 3 h) exhibited the strongest inhibitory activity. A peptide, RDDPEPSYK (RDD), was isolated and identified as a specific α-glucosidase inhibitor. RDD showed inhibitory efficacy comparable to acarbose and significantly reduced lipid accumulation by downregulating lipid synthesis-related proteins, including SREBP-1C and FAS. These findings suggest that sea cucumber collagen peptides may have potential applications in anti-obesity and anti-hepatic steatosis interventions. - Source: PubMed

Xu ZheYan XuQin ZijinZhang RuiDong XiufangLi TengfeiZhang ZihaoChang JialeLi Tingting - The fungal pathogen causes fatal cryptococcal meningitis, a significant global health risk. Unlike most fungi, expresses chitin deacetylases that convert its cell wall chitin into chitosan, helping to evade chitin-triggered host immunity. However, it is unclear how the properties and accessibility of these chitosans vary between strains and growth conditions, and how they influence the host immune response. To show how chitin deacetylase activity and growth conditions shape the properties of cell wall chitosans, we present the first comprehensive analysis of the chitosan content, fraction of acetylation (FA), enzymatic degradation products by host chitinases, and accessibility in various strains, including chitin deacetylase mutants, cultivated under different conditions. Certain chitin deacetylase knockouts, as well as challenging growth conditions, lead to higher FAs and enhanced exposure, associated with stronger host immune responses. The response to cryptococcal chitin/chitosan ranges from low (resulting in cryptococcosis) to adequate (providing effective host defense) and excessive (leading to hyper-inflammation). Correlation between the strength of the immune response and the abundance of chitin-binding proteins was used to rapidly screen a multitude of strains and growth conditions for their immunogenic potential. Our approach provides insight into -related disease caused by insufficient and excessive immune responses, and may accelerate the development of effective cell-based vaccines. - Source: PubMed
