Xue QinwenDing WenzhenLu ZhonglinChen FangJia XiaoHongLiu JieSun JiahongLi ShuaoZhou JianqiaoZhao ChengYu JieLiang Ping - A causal, mentalistic understanding of communication-a process by which a speaker's mind causes a change in a listener's mind-can support powerful inferences that go beyond observable data. If A struggles to activate a toy but succeeds after B whispers to A, you can infer that B knew how to activate it even without hearing what was said. Although humans are precocious communicators, much remains unknown about how we come to understand communication as a process by which speakers causally influence listeners. Extending prior work on children's forward inferences about communication-from speakers to listeners-the current work examined how children reason backwards from listeners' behaviors to recover speakers' knowledge. Children viewed two scenarios where a listener failed to activate a toy twice before finally succeeding. In one scenario the speaker communicated before a listener's success, whereas in the other scenario the speaker communicated before a listener's failure. Even 3-year-olds chose the former speaker as the one who knew how the toy works (Exp.1). However, when communication always preceded success but the scenarios differed in what would have happened without communication (i.e., the listener was poised to fail or succeed), a preference for the former speaker did not emerge until later (Exps.2-3). Importantly, across all experiments, children held no preference when speakers produced non-speech vocalizations. These results suggest that even young children have an abstract understanding of communication as a causal, mentalistic process, but their inferences are constrained by the causal cues available in context and continue to develop throughout early childhood. - Source: PubMed

Chuey AaronSparks Robert ZGweon Hyowon - The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of genetic and non-genetic factors on milk composition and cow metabolism. Czech Holstein ( ) and Czech Simmental cows ( ) were analysed. The effects of farm, breed, parity, lactation stage, and polymorphisms on the , , , , and genes were evaluated. The contents of protein, fat, and fatty acids (FAs); the levels of -hydroxybutyric acid (BHB), citric acid, acetone, and urea; and somatic cell scores were analysed. The farm and lactation stages were the most significant factors influencing the parameters, as well as their interactions. The effects of parity and breed were much weaker. The impact of gene polymorphisms was very low, as were the interactions between gene and farm, between lactation stage and farm, and between parity and lactation stage. BHB levels were influenced by farm in the models including all genes and by parity in the models including , , and genes. In contrast, the effect of lactation stage on BHB levels was not significant in any model. The contents of protein and lactose were influenced by parity and lactation stage and, in some cases, by farm-lactation stage interactions and by gene polymorphisms. Urea, citric acid, acetone, and FA levels were affected by the lactation stage, and urea was also affected by the interaction of the farm and lactation stage. Daily milk production correlated negatively and significantly with components other than urea, acetone, BHB, and polyunsaturated FAs. The urea content and milk yield were significantly positively correlated. The correlations of BHB with fat protein and fat lactose ratios were significantly positive, but the prediction of ketosis in individual cows does not seem to be reliable. The level of BHB in milk, which is routinely assessed during milk performance testing, is suggested as a field predictor of clinical or subclinical ketosis in animals. - Source: PubMed

Janus membranes with hierarchical architectures have been proposed to enhance the performance of direct contact MD (DCMD). In this study, a hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/catechol film was coated on the surface of hydrophobic polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) substrate whose inner pore surfaces were modified with hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and fluorinated silane (FAS-17) agents. Comprehensive characterization using SEM, AFM, ATR-FTIR(6), Raman spectroscopy, tensile testing, EDS, and surface wettability analyses confirmed the successful formation of Janus structures with dual functionality. The Janus samples exhibited a pure water flux (PWF) higher than both the PCTFE support (37.25 kg m h) and commercial (34.48 kg m h) membranes. By incorporating PDMS and FAS-17, fluxes of 46.7 and 44.4 kg m h were achieved, respectively, while maintaining a salt rejection of ≥ 99.7% for 35,000 ppm NaCl. Both PDMS and FAS-17 modified membranes displayed improved resistance to wetting and scaling, even under complex saline conditions containing CaCl, NaCl, and surfactants (CTAB, SDS). Among them, the sample coated with FAS-17 exhibited the best anti-fouling and stability due to its fluorinated sublayer and superior interfacial hydrophobicity. The results demonstrated that the engineered Janus membranes, integrating hydrophilic and hydrophobic functionalities, achieved high permeate flux, excellent salt rejection, and strong fouling resistance, thereby contributing to the development of membrane materials for MD desalination. - Source: PubMed
Yari HamidehPakizeh MajidDashti AliChenar Mahdi Pourafshari - Graves' disease (GD) is a common autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland and is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis. Given the limitations of current conventional antithyroid therapy for GD, including side effects and relapse concerns, exploring alternative therapeutic options, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is of clinical interest. TCM, with its advantages of multi-component, multi-target actions and relatively mild side effects, has become a promising alternative therapy for GD. - Source: PubMed
